Description
The Sequim-Happy Valley-Blyn route is a local hilly workout with 2200 feet of climbing. Start in the Sequim Costco parking lot heading west on Washington Street to a roundabout, then south on River Road, warming up as you ride a slight grade up River to Happy Valley Road. Here your first climb starts as you head east across Happy Valley south of Bell Hill.
Where Happy Valley Road turns north you can enjoy a nice descent down to US Highway 101.  Watch for traffic as you cross over US 101 at Whitefeather Way to catch the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) east towards Blyn.  The  second significant climb is up Chicken Coop Road just east of the Longhouse Market and Deli.  Over this three mile segment, it’s a fairly steady uphill with a few rolling dips, but also two short stretches of 8% + grade. At the east end of Chicken Coop, take care crossing north over US 101 and head back west to Blyn and a stop at the Long House for a break if you want one. Get back on the ODT heading west to Whitefeather Way. Happy Valley Road is about a quarter mile west and you’ll have to cross back over US 101 one more time.  Remember that descent you enjoyed on the way out?  Now you pay as you climb back south on Happy Valley Road.  Going west on Happy Valley is easier, though, than on the way out; follow it west to a left turn onto McFarland Drive for a short loop south before returning to Happy Valley Road west to River Road.  Turn right (north) on River and return to the starting point at Costco.
