The Lost Mountain Loop combines some distance and one long hill climb for a good hard training session if you really go at it…or just a good hard ride if you slow your pace and make a point of enjoying the beauty, quiet, and sense of isolation in the northern foothills of the Olympic Mountains.
The route starts at the Cracked Bean Coffee Shop and winds its way west out of Sequim proper on the Olympic Discovery Trail. Turn left and head south at Barr Road to Highway 101. Turn right and head west on Highway 101 to Blue Mountain Road, where you take a left to cross over and head back on east-bound 101.
Turn right at Sherburne Road just after crossing the McDonald Creek Bridge, following Sherburne south for about a mile where it bends sharply left at the junction with Atterbury Road. Follow the gentle rollers of Atterbury Rd east for about four miles to the intersection with Hooker Road, then turn right on Hooker for the first major climb–a couple miles with a few significant grades of 8-9 per cent. You’ll get some relief when you top out at the junction of Hooker and Olson roads.
Go left (east) on Olson which offers a nice gentle descent through farm land to Taylor Cutoff Road and Lost Mountain Road.
If you’ve had enough already, you can jump ahead on the route map and pick up where it returns to this intersection from the out-and-back portion up Lost Mountain Road.
Otherwise, turn right and start the long slog up Lost Mountain Road through what’s known locally as the “Texas Valley.” You’ll encounter few cars on this chip seal back road (which is in pretty good condition overall), and enjoy some stunning vistas as you climb, climb, and climb some more. Lost Mountain Road dead ends about eight miles in and after an all too brief fun descent to the road’s end, you turn back north to retrace the route.
Of course right off the bat you have…another climb, but it’s short and before you know it you’ll be coasting back down–at speed if you want–with only a few minor uphill sections (the ones that got your hopes up on the way in, but ended up disappointing as they gave way to still more climbing).
Lost Mountain connects with Taylor Cutoff where Olson Road comes in from the left, and you’ll just make a sweeping left past Olson for a straight, mostly flat, run in north to Highway 101.
Right on Highway 101 for a short bit and take the ramp for the River Road exit. Left on River to cross over 101, and then decide whether to take the lane and bear left to go through the traffic circle and into the Walmart parking lot before heading east (to your right) to Priest Road, or bear right on to West Washington Street and then fairly quickly merge left to the turn lane at the light at Priest Road (with Home Depot on your right, Walmart to your left).
Once on Priest Road, travel north for just under a mile before turning right on West Hendrickson.
Follow West Hendrickson to the traffic signal at the intersection with North 5th Avenue. Turn left and continue on to the four-way stop at the junction of North 5th Avenue and Old Olympic Highway.
Turn right on Old Olympic and continue for about a mile to the end of the route at the Cracked Bean, on your left.
