Description
The Lower Big Quilcene mountain bike route follows a multi-use trail on National Forest land near the small town of Quilcene. Access to both the upper and lower trailheads is fee based.
It’s a popular out-and-back trail that can also be shuttled from the Upper Big Quilcene Trailhead to the Lower Big Quilcene Trailhead. Along the way the woods and river provide a pleasant background and soundtrack for an enticing jaunt in the forest.
From the top, the trail starts as smooth twisting singletrack with frequent tight vegetation and embankments. Several creek crossings along the way may be wet or muddy. The middle part of Lower Big Quilcene opens up with a wider corridor and longer straightaways. Sections of rocks and roots make this more technical and the edge of the trail gets steeper above the river. Two adjacent bridge crossings signal the third portion of which becomes a wide track along a clear corridor. Rider’s speed can really pick up here, so be alert for other trail users. The last mile of the trail is a moderate, but steady, climb to the trailhead.
