Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels. Part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt. All you need is a bike, a bag, and a lock!
It started in New York City 19 years ago and has since become an annual event in cities and towns all across America.
The basic idea for Cranksgiving is pretty simple. First, find out what your local charity or food bank needs. Then, put together a list of your local grocery stores. After both the lists are in hand, determine what stores the riders should have to go to and what items they should buy at each location, then assemble them accordingly on a manifest master-copy. This determination should be chosen according to whatever manner seems appropriate depending on the desired complexity of the routing options and distances involved for the ride. Once the manifest master-copy is finalized all an organizer needs to do is set a date, time, and location for the start of the ride, then promote the event.
Cranksgiving in Sequim this year will take place on Saturday, November 17th, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This is the 20th Anniversary of Cranksgiving nationwide. Over 150 cities across the country will participate including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. On the Olympic Peninsula, Port Angeles will hold its first Cranksgiving, Port Townsend is gearing up for its fourth, and Sequim will host its Eighth Anniversary Cranksgiving ride.
The need is greater than ever with many of our neighbors relying on the Food Bank to feed their families. They need our help. The Sequim Food Bank has provided a list of their most wanted items. So come be a part of this year’s Cranksgiving and help fill the Food Bank’s shelves so our neighbors can eat. Cranskgiving is typically held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving as a reminder of our hope that ALL our neighbors are able to share in the bounty of this day.
Last year in Sequim, 33 individual riders and 3 teams gathered over a ton of badly needed food (2347 lbs) – a record for Sequim but one that we can beat if we try. It’s up to us.
Here’s what we need to do:
- Get the word out: This week we’ll be placing posters in coffee shops, gyms and other businesses around town. YOU can help in this effort by talking the event up with your friends and neighbors. The distances are short and families can easily participate.
- Show up and ride: The more riders we have the more food we gather – it’s that simple. Each 5 person team accounts for over 400 lbs of food on average, each individual rider accounts for accounts for ~40lbs
- Make a commitment: CRANKSGIVING takes at most 3 hours of your time yet the impact is profound. A few hours on a Saturday morning feeds your neighbors.
