CYCLING ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA
Explore the OP
The Olympic Peninsula (“the OP”) is a place where you can explore a whole new world of cycling, whether you’re into road biking, mountain biking, mixed surface, and gravel riding, or all of them! You can pursue new challenges or just enjoy a leisurely ride. Whatever your choice, though, you’ll be cycling through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country with snow-capped mountain vistas, rolling farmlands, and the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Salish Sea (the Strait of Juan de Fuca), or the Hood Canal right close by. In a single day, you can ride from sea-level to nearly a mile high at the summit of Hurricane Ridge and cycle through the quiet green of moss-covered old-growth cedar, fir, and big-leaf maple trees in the heart of the Hoh Rainforest—both in Olympic National Park. It’s all here…and waiting for you!
Serving All Cyclists
Our non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Olympic Peninsula Bicycle Alliance (OPBA), is dedicated to serving the needs of all cyclists on the OP, whether they live here or are just visiting. That’s why we’ve created a website providing virtually all the information a cyclist needs for a safe, enjoyable ride in this cycling paradise.
The OPBA–our board, our staff, and our members–are all experienced cyclists with a wealth of knowledge about the OP, and every one of us is committed to making this a cyclist-friendly region. For each of us, cycling on the OP is not just about the extraordinary scenery or the wide variety of routes we get to choose from every day, it’s about everything that goes into making any ride great, including getting a warm welcome when you roll into a city, town, or village and visit a place of business that is proudly “Cyclist Friendly.”
WHERE WE WANT OP CYCLING TO GO
We develop and maintain close collaborative relationships with local governments, other public and private organizations, and the business community throughout the Olympic Peninsula so we can all work together effectively to make everywhere on the OP a safer, better place to ride and a true “destination” for cyclists from around the world.
One of our key partnerships is with the Peninsula Trails Coalition (PTC)—supporting their efforts to complete the Olympic Discovery Trail so that cyclists (as well as hikers and equestrians) can eventually travel, almost completely free of vehicular traffic, from Port Townsend to the Pacific Ocean. Our bicycle safety, education, and training programs are developed and implemented through cooperation with a wide variety of organizations including the Cascade Bicycle Club, League of American Bicyclists, local school districts, and other non-profits such as the Boys and Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula, and the Olympic Peninsula YMCA.
Passionate About Cycling
We’re passionate about cycling anywhere, but especially about the rides in our own “backyard”—anywhere on the OP! We’re also fervent about getting others out on a bicycle. That’s why we partner with school districts and youth organizations such as the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club, and why we support groups like Local 20/20 in Port Townsend that understand the role bicycles play in making communities more self-reliant, sustainable, and resilient. We value the beauty surrounding us on the OP and we’re committed to preserving that. Getting more people on bikes more often isn’t a magic single solution, but it sure can help in a lot of ways!
We hope you enjoy exploring our website, and we know you’ll enjoy exploring this particular cycling paradise–the OP–every time you visit.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact us. And if we’re lucky, we’ll see you on the road or the trail soon!
